Weather plays a spoil sport or not?

In over 30 years Manali and Rohtang pass have not received any snow in the month of June, this was to change in 2010. With Rohtang recording 2 to 3 feet snowfall and Baralach la recording 6 to 10 feet of snow in just one to two days. With conflicting reports coming from various sources, we were not sure what to do. We know that in the first week of June all was fine and scores of travelers completed their trips from Manali to Leh with almost no problem at all. Will we do it?

The plan was on, we saw not change in the updates and Rohtang and Baralach La both were closed. We bit the bullet and on the 11th hour, made the decision to switch the plan. It was 11 June, afternoon, when I made a quick decision, confirmed with the rest of the participants and switched the plan - Manali out, Srinagar in.

Made a few quick calls, booked a cab, some place to stay and also on transit routes/stay options and within a few hours the plan was switched to appraoch Leh from the west now. the changed plan was:
  • Part 1 - Delhi to Srinagar, stay in Srinagar
  • Part 2 - Srinagar to Kargil and then proceed to Leh
  • Part 3 - Leh baby!!
  • Part 4 - Panoramic Pangong
  • Part 5 - Khardung la wait and despair
  • Part 6 - The journey back and more drama
Away we go!
